Unfortunately I listened to my guidance teachers in school who insisted that ‘working with animals' was not a suitable career path for me, they also pointed out that science wasn't my strongest subject so I had better come up with something else!
I duly gained a BSc Degree and worked in various jobs before settling in the Insurance industry for eight years, working in Human Resources, General Management and Training and Development. Like many large corporations the company that I worked for went through many mergers and acquisitions, each time I went through re-applying for my job I thought again about Veterinary Nursing. In 2001 I took the leap of faith, left my job and enrolled on an animal care course (I had to improve my sciences after all!)
I completed an HNC in Animal Care and then applied to Telford College in Edinburgh to study Veterinary Nursing. Soon after starting college I was offered a full time training place at a local practice.
I work in a mixed practice which has facilities for treating small animal, equine and large animal cases which allows me to work with a diverse and interesting group of clients and their animals.
My only regret about Veterinary Nursing; I didn't do it sooner! I love the variety of my job, dealing with different situations and different clients. My particular areas of interest are Feline Medicine, Feline Behaviour and Pet Insurance.
