Regional co-ordinator

Janet Litten, VN, MBVNA

E-mail: jmlitten@bicton.ac.uk

Tel: 01395 562343

Jane Litten with Edith the bearded dragon – resident at Bicton College. In 1996 I started my training as an SVN, qualifying in 1999.The practices I have worked in have all been mixed and based in the South West. Previous to veterinary nursing I had worked in countryside management. I joined Bicton College five years ago as a lecturer in Veterinary Nursing. Since 2004 I have also taken on the roles of Veterinary Nursing and ANA course tutor. While continuing my role at Bicton, I am very pleased now to have been accepted for the role of BVNA regional co-ordinator for Devon and Cornwall as I feel strongly that veterinary nurses need and desire CPD at all stages of their career. I want to facilitate access to relevant, contempory subjects that reflect what nurses and practices require. These events will aim to be not only informative and interesting, but organised in a way that all will feel comfortable to explore topics and develop knowledge and understanding that can be put in to developing good practice. On the comfort topic – hopefully they will also be enjoyable and be accompanied by succulent treats!

REPORT
Date and Time: Wednesday 20th February 2-8.30pm
Subject: Anaesthesia and analgesia
Main Speaker: Paul Crawford BVetMed CertVA MRCVS
Sponsors: Vetoquinol, Quality Clinical Reagents, Merial
Location: Bicton College, East Budleigh, Devon

Paul Crawford (BvetMed Cert VA MRCVS provided 28 delegates to an afternoon of up-to-date information on recognition of pain, pain management and properties of drugs available for the management of pain. This gave much food for thought particularly in nurses’ ability and management of pain in our feline friends!

As we progressed in to the evening Paul introduced the subject of anaesthetic monitoring techniques. This was enhanced (and I am sure created demands back in practice) by the demonstration of blood gas analysis using the IRMA analysis machine kindly provided by Jo Jago of Quality Clinical Reagents.

From here we went on to look at CPCR with several of the delegates kindly ‘volunteering’ to demonstrate techniques with clear guidance and insight given by Paul.

During the evening session Simon Boulton BVetMed MRCVS, the Veterinary Health Advisor for Vetoquinol gave a valuable and interesting presentation to Alfaxan, the steroidal anaesthetic recently released in to the market.

Refreshment came in the form of a carvery supper provided by Bicton College Catering with provisions sourced mainly from the local area.
