Bonny Millar CVT(USA) RVN REVN MBVNA

My year as BVNA president is now over and I find myself reflecting on what we as a council have accomplished over the past 12 months. We have finalised a business plan, developed a CPD partnership, launched a more professional VNJ and built a new website.
Our relationships with the other veterinary associations are better than ever and much work has been done with the RCVS VN council to move vet nursing in the right direction with regard to regulation. These are exciting times for our profession and I relish the chance to listen and pass on our views to those who need to hear them!
My main role continues to be promoting veterinary nursing to the wider public and the veterinary profession. With over twenty five years experience working in equine medicine and surgery, I want to continue encouraging equine nurses to share their knowledge and skills with groups and organizations outside their own practices. In addition, the National Veterinary Nursing Week in July each year continues to grow on the success of previous years. Nurses from all over the country are getting involved with enthusiasm far beyond our expectations. Plans are now underway to make the next VN week for 2009 spectacular by reaching out to over 150,000 people throughout the country.
All veterinary nurses need support at some stage in their training and careers. I am just as passionate about professionalism and training as I am about the traditional aspects of nursing. Nurses are never too old or too experienced to serve patients, colleagues and clients with excellence and respect. I relish the chance to enrol on CPD courses and am privileged to live in a country that has much to choose from. At my first council meeting in 2004 I realised what a privilege it was to serve our organisation and work with such a vibrant and dynamic team of staff and Council members. As an association we will continue to strive collectively to see nursing respected as a profession by all our peers in the veterinary industry.
