Devon Regional Meeting Reviews

Equine Wound Management |12th October 2011

CPD for the equine nurse is sometimes a rarity but with the enthusiasm of the nurses working at St David's Equine Hospital, Lympstone, Devon and one of their vets, Bob Barker, we were able to arrange an evenings talk on equine wound management at the practice.

From reviews of basic wound facts, Bob developed on principles regarding cause and effect of different wound types as well as management and nursing procedures to follow, from first contact to conclusion of the healing process.

This was presented as an excellent electronic side show with clear and informative illustrations and photos of real life cases. Alongside this, Bob elaborated through amusing tails and illustrative discussion.

During a short break, a tour of the fantastic and impressive facilities was lead by Bob - from the scintigraphy room to the architecturally impressive indoor school. The break also gave the attendees an opportunity to enjoy the elaborate buffet, shopped for by the nurses and financed by our sponsor, Burtons.

The second half of the talk addressed potential problems that we might encounter with equine wound management, followed by case studies that brought discussion and deliberation from the audience.

When questions were asked for, the normal quiet gap did not occur, and Bob conclusively responded to a range of enquires and queries that were generated by the excellent content and delivery of the talk.

Jo Jago of Burtons should also be mentioned and thanked, one for providing sponsorship and, two, for contributing through a short presentation on consumables available for equine wound management.
