Review for Northern Ireland Regional Meetings
Pondering Parasites | 12th October 2011
BVNA Northern Ireland Region held a very successful CPD evening on Wednesday 12th October in the Veterinary Surgeons Supply Company, Lisburn. The evening entitled, 'Pondering Parasites' was kindly sponsored by Bayer Animal Health. Doireann Dowling RVN BA (Hons.Mod.Env.Sci) travelled from Dundalk to be our guest speaker for the evening. Doireann is an RVN with the Veterinary Council of Ireland. In 2010 she set up her own company giving lectures for Bayer, as well as lecturing student Veterinary Nurses in Dundalk Institute of Technology.
The talk proved extremely popular. 28 nurses and practice staff started the evening with pizza before listening to Doireann talk about the effect that parasites have on the health and wellbeing of our canine and feline patients. Quite a few tips were picked up during the course of the evening, including - chronic pedal dermatitis/recurring pedal dermatitis - would be an idea to administer a worm treatment to rule out a hookworm infestation.
Doireann explained in detail the lifecycle of the flea and worm with videos and interesting pictures incorporated into her presentation. The evening as a whole was a great success and we look forward to welcoming Doireann back to the North again in the future. As usual - many thanks to VSSCO for the loan of their premises for the evening, to Mr Tony McConville, Territorial Manager for Bayer Animal Health for his ongoing support of BVNA NI, and to Doireann, for giving up her evening to travel up and speak for the evening.
