Chemotherapy in Practice | Iain Grant & Jo Jones

October 12th 2011

Wednesday October 12th arrived very swiftly on the heels of BVNA congress 2011, 16 nurses gathered to listen to Iain Grant, clinician teacher in oncology at Liverpool University, and Jo Jones, chemotherapy nurse at Liverpool University, discuss chemotherapy in practice.

Jo kicked off the evening following tasty pizza, by discussing the safety aspect of chemotherapy. We are all aware that we need to be extremely careful around cytotoxic drugs but Jo suggested some hints and tips and also some different equipment to enable the safe use of chemotherapy in practice.

Iain then carried on with the various side effects and complications that we can commonly see with our chemo patients and how we should approach those cases.

The whole evening was kindly sponsored by Pfizer and Jonny Lambert followed Iain with a quick update on the new licensing for cerenia.

I would like to thank Iain, Jo, Jonny and Pfizer Animal Health for a fantastic evening, everyone really enjoyed the evening and gave fantastic feedback.

Basic Nursing of Birds | Richard Jones & Carli Dodd

The evening of Sept 7th 2011 saw 10 nurses gather at Liverpool University Leahurst campus for an entertaining evening of pizza and learning some basic nursing of birds.  Richard Jones and Carli Dodd (vet and nurse respectively) from Avian Veterinary Services in Knutsford, Cheshire gave up their evening to talk to us all about the ins and outs of avian nursing, including anatomy, blood sampling, fluid therapy, first aid and anaesthesia. Once the "formal" part of the evening was over and done with we had a go at some of the practical techniques they had discussed on some cadavers they brought along, we were able to crop tube and perform venepuncture on these under their watchful eyes.

Richard and Carli make a fantastic team and their work at AVS is remarkable, they take in stray "domestic" birds and injured wild birds, they treat and rehabilitate them and then either rehome or release as appropriate back into the wild. I would like to thank Richard and Carli for giving up their free time to come to speak to us and Richard's wife Jo for suggesting them.
