BVNA At The National Pet Show, London 2017

In support of our campaign to promote the veterinary nursing profession, BVNA attended the National Pet Show, London at the Excel Centre on Saturday 6 & Sunday 7 May located within the Animal Zone. The team interacted with the general public answering all sorts of questions; including training to become a veterinary nurse, interesting aspects of the job, the diversity of being a veterinary nurse worldwide, and general enquiries in relation to responsible and preventative pet health care.

Wendy Nevins RVN, BVNA Junior Vice President & VNAM Committee Chair reports 'It was a great two days catching up with some RVNs whom managed to take advantage of our 10% discount off membership renewal and new applications, whilst discussing current issues within the veterinary nursing profession.

It was good to be able to chat with some prospective student nurses; giving advice and answering their questions about what our role really entails. We also spoke with many young adults, as well as children and parents, not only about a career as a registered veterinary nurse but the diverse duties we carry out on a day to day basis within practice. Alongside this we spoke to hundreds of pet owners about responsible pet care. Our stand competition proved popular, particularly with the younger generation 'What has the naughty puppy eaten?' where entrants had to feel the puppies to determine the foreign body they had swallowed! All ages took part and we raised an amazing £137 for our Charity of the Year, The Daphne Shipman Benevolent Fund.

Promotional bags containing information leaflets explaining what Registered Veterinary Nurses do, how to become a veterinary nurse and also a guide to good pet care were handed out to delegates along with promotional trolley coin keyrings and dog tags with the tagline 'I Love My RVN'.

We had lots of fun with our personalised social media frame, getting some great shots around the show as well as at our stand - make sure you keep an eye on our dedicated VNAM Facebook page as we will be uploading them over the rest of the month. If you spot yourself in the photos please feel free to tag yourself! We even managed to get a selfie in the frame with Michaela Strachan, the wildlife presenter which was a huge hit with one of our team who was rather starstruck as they were huge fan of Michaela back in the 80's!

Erika Feilberg RVN, BVNA Council & VNAM Committee Member, provided a 30 minute presentation on the subject of 'A Day in the Life of a Registered Veterinary Nurse' on both days, which proved popular and gained much interest with questions from the audience in relation to Erika's daily role as an RVN.

Some of our Regional Co-ordinator Team have organised both full day and evening events around the UK during May to help raise the profile of the Registered Veterinary Nurse with fundraising on the day for our Charity of the Year, The Daphne Shipman Benevolent Fund.
