Charlotte Ottewill

I’m currently a first-year student studying veterinary nursing at Sparsholt University Centre. I’m a mature student and previously worked for Coca-Cola European Partners in sales and marketing for eleven years. I decided to embark on a career change to follow my passion for animals and love for science whilst still utilising my communication and people skills. I am particularly interested in client education as this enables us to have a direct positive impact on improving animal welfare. During my time at CCEP I was involved in some incredible and inspirational events including the London 2012 Olympic and Para-Olympic Games. I was also part of a GB women’s network project, set up to address sexual inequality in the workplace. I believe that having a diverse and inclusive team improves productivity and overall engagement so I would like to explore the recruitment of veterinary nurses from less represented groups in the profession.

I would also like to use my position to increase awareness of the importance of mental health and look to promote all mental health services available to veterinary nurses. I will also strive to raise public awareness and respect of our profession and look to promote initiatives and campaigns set out and supported by the BVNA.

I have an interest in wound management, nursing clinics and rabbits and guinea pigs and would love to develop these interests by undertaking further study.

Outside of my professional career I am a mum to two young children and a military wife, a role which presents daily challenges. As a result, I understand the importance of juggling a professional life and raising a family. I’m also a keen netball player, competing in a weekly league. I also have a six-year old dog called Indie and two Guinea Pigs.

Hilary Wood

I am currently a 1st year student nurse at Askham Bryan Newcastle. I am a mature student having worked in practice for many years.

I love all aspects of the job but have a special interest in theatre and surgery, and hope to do the surgical nursing certificate once I’ve qualified.

I currently help run a Facebook page for student veterinary nurses as I’m passionate about education, I am dyslexic and like to encourage and help others with learning differences.

I am very happy to have become a BVNA council member, I would like to encourage more students (and RVNs) to join the BVNA to help promote our amazing profession and secure the future of the title of Veterinary Nurse.
